Nostalgic Motor-Lorry

Home
The first model after "reanimation" was built up in 1996.
It was a nostalgic motor-lorry in the scale ca. 1:10; a rubust heavy model with hinged engine bonnet, hinged doors and more specialties.
Furthermore an electric drive was built in and also a radio control with all steering functions.

The scale of a model as a rule is determined by the available wheels.
The largest MÄRKLIN wheels have a diameter of approx. 85mm; with regard to the drive and the radio control this seemed to be too small. Also was feared that the pressed-in collar of the pulley could be loosened because of the torque, and a special truck profile they donīt have also.
Special minitruck wheels however are exorbitant detailed and thus relative expensive.

Finally well-priced minicar wheels with a diameter of 100mm were used.
The disadvantage is that they also donīt look like truck wheels and have to be adapted in someway. If one doesnīt like to risk a damage of a pulley or a breaker plate itīs the best to use a self-made flange or the like.

This situation is improved since that time:
The METALLUS company offers truck wheels with a diameter of 111mm which are to be used each with 2 large pulleys.
With this wheels also good-looking twin tyres should be possible, what essential improves the appearance of a truck model.
But the main benefit is, that e. g. with a twin tyre drive axle the force is transmitted by 4 resp. with differential by 8 pulleys; the risk of a collar damage with this exists no longer.

The model had not a damping, but the wheels were suspended in this way that they were able to compensate unevenesses of 10-15mm without lifting any wheel.
The front wheels were seperate suspended while the rear wheels were mounted to an one piece axle with its central motor drive.
The complete rear axle at both sides was movable suspended.

As the steering a simplified Ackermann-steering (see "Other Projects") was used, which could be operated both by steering wheel and by steering servo.

The motor was a MEKANIK motor from the sixties.
Although it is a 20V motor with a 7 cell accu (8,4V) and an adequate gear reduction it was strong enough to drive the model.
The motor was movable supported by a cross bar to allow the movement of the rear axle; during reversing the counter torque was compensated by the load floor.
Advantageous was the small construction of the motor, but unfavourable that there was no place to build in a differential. Thus the model could be driven by only one wheel.
